Drawings for Life in Winter are coming along steadily. This week I’m focusing more on the subject matter of the series and how the various scenes relate to my previous bodies of work. The funny thing is that the series is no different than anything else I’ve done before. I like to focus on the simple things in life since they’re the most difficult to appreciate. I’m also a big fan of American Realism and how those artists were really documenting their moment in time, no matter how mundane. I feel like a lot of art lately has lost that and, maybe because the chaos going on in our real world, it’s become more of a comment on society to construct art that’s more fantastical (even if it’s just pretty women in white dresses, it’s still a fantasy). I’m not sure, but the direction of this work feels right to me for now. I’m excited to see where it will eventually go.
